Oh, so this is happening.
Okaayyyy. I’ve been really on the fence about this pairing since Neal died, turns out I still am (please, oh mighty show-runners convince me of the pairing you’ve been decreeing is canon), but the costumes from the finale are heart stopping. I may die of ballgowns.
Quick crit: I feel the story structure of season 3B to be too wobbly to support such a big cast and so many faceted back stories. This is not game of thrones! You can’t be so complex and layered while still trying to hang on to simplistic themes and jumping back and forth in the timeline of the story. Just…no. It’s funny Rumple used slight of hand in the end of last episodes (I know Rumbellers, we need to hug about this) and I kind of feel that there was some clunky parlor tricks in getting Emma to “lose” her power. For me, Emma’s magic (which, I think does effect her savior-ness) has been a really interesting plot point since season 1, and it irks me to see this piece of Emma’s development get shunted off, and either she was putting on a brave face about it, or she really doesn’t care that much.
I like to think that Emma’s savior title and magic wielding is part of her newer self image, the one where she’s Henry’s mom, and Snow’s daughter, and she’s not alone anymore, and that fact is only a little scary to her. Despite her giving it up to save someone it doesn’t feel like a hero’s sacrifice, it feels like regression (as does Emma’s denial-filled mantra that she’s taking Henry back to New York). And it all does a poor job of tying Regina’s story to the main plots, which kind of bites because Regina has slowly become a hero I kind of root for, and it was all just less believable because it all felt so rushed at the end.
Despite all this I’m still watching and having feels.
I blame Grumpy.
