#28 - Don’t you have magic?

This moment, this look on Emma’s face, this moment of actual and complete realisation that she is in so out of her depth sealed my love for this character almost as much as the chainsaw.

This is a woman with no faith, no belief in anything. She never believed in anyone or anything because all she had ever known was what it was to be let down: her parents let her down by abandoning her, her foster family let her down by sending her back, her various foster homes let her down by never being home, Henry’s father let her down, the system let her down.

But more than anything, she let herself down. She didn’t believe in herself. She didn’t trust in herself. No matter how many people told her she was the Saviour, she denied it, because HOW could she be something so incredible and so special, if no one ever wanted her?

This is the moment that she realised that not only was Henry right about the curse, but he was right about everything else, and he was right about her. The one person who believed in her staked his life on knowing exactly who she was and what she was capable of.

“It’s all true” isn’t just about the magic. It’s about the fact that she’s the only one she can save her son. She, the person who can’t believe in anyone or anything, has to believe in herself so she can save the one person who didn’t want to let her go.

WhereBuffy’smagic is addictive storyline was over the top and far too on the nose and wrapped up incredibly easily theOUATstoryline appears to actually approach things correctly. Magic isn’t a drug. It’s allure isn’t chemical. It’s the immense power it gives the user that’s so addictive and destructive. The magic changes a person. Warps them until they’re unrecognizable (like drugs) and when they’re finally clear of it it leaves them with only the tatters of a life.

That’s magic in a metaphor done right.

I’m not good at math, but I made a quick “Ship to Fic ratio” pie chart from ff.net based on number of fics per pairing- just to appease myself that Emma/Hot Men has nothing on Swan Queen. Data collected yesterday so values may have changed since, but roughly we know swan queen is on top.

Also, I would love to see a word count per ship- as we have crazy long multi-part stories that are in some cases almost 200,000 words.

*crossover fics not included.

*If someone has time to do a better one with more specific breakdowns, I’d love to see it!
